Born on March 3, 1756, in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, William Godwin was the son of a clergyman.
After graduating from Hoxton Theological Seminary, he served as a minister in Ware, Stowmarket, and Beaconsfield.
Transition to Literary and Social Activism
In 1782, Godwin moved to London with the aspiration of reforming society not through religion but through his writings.
He anonymously published "Life of Chatham" (1783), "Sketch of History" (1784), and various journal articles. His breakthrough came in 1793 with "Inquiry Concerning Political Justice," where he defined political justice as "the practice of the principles of morality
