Jules Elie Delaunay's paintings are magnificent examples of the Neoclassical style recognized by the French Academy in the nineteenth century.
His themes of ancient mythological heroes, muscular male physiques, and historical battle scenes, were all within guidelines espoused by the Academy. To his credit Delaunay realized the danger of undue acceptance of strict rules, rejecting the overstated frostiness
